Joy says about her work
“Since 1992 my work has become non-figurative. My painting is a voyage of exploration which must have a life and exist as a creative entity in its own right rather than follow some normally visible reality. My work stems from my desire to give a visible expression to the attraction of opposites, such as something "delicate" and something "strong".
This is an universal phenonomen which I am constantly exploring and I try to produce a harmony out of these discords. I want the "conscious" and the "unconscious" to work together; the "unconscious" being the reservoir for my imagination and the spirit on which the painting is built. I work in a rhythm of colour and movement with a continuous awareness of light and luminosity in the hope of arresting the eye and of stimulating the senses.”
